Make an impression in your classroom with our programme of workshops.
Schools Workshops
We offer a range of workshops for delivery in schools. Our workshops are designed for students in Key Stage 1 and 2 to facilitate learning in the areas of design and technology, art, history and literacy. Our workshops complement the National Curriculum and the suggested schemes of work outlined by the QCA. All workshops contain hands-on activities that promote cross-curricular learning opportunities for students.
The Workshops
90 minute workshops
Beginners Pop-up Books: On-the-Fold
Make your own small pop-up book in 90 minutes! Students will begin the workshop by examining different pop-up books and analysing the paper engineering of specific pop-ups. They will then create their own pop-up book with three on-the-fold pop-ups. This lesson is a great addition to suggested Design and Technology schemes involving Pop-Up Books and paper engineering or as a special DT or Art lesson. A perfect workshop for students who have little or no experience of making pop-ups.
Suitable for Key Stage 2.
Advanced Pop-up Books: Story Animation
This workshop is for the more advanced pop-up makers and takes construction one step further. Students will examine the construction of more intricate paper engineering in small groups. They will then create their own pop-ups to animate a scene from a favourite storybook. Students will consider which part of the story will most benefit from animation and assess how effective their pop-up is at telling the story.
Suitable for Key Stage 2.
Bookbinding
A perfect workshop for Book Week. Students will investigate the technology behind bookbinding, compare examples and report the differences through group activities. They will then create and bind their own notebook. The pages are stitched together and bound with a cover to create a sturdy notebook, ideal for use as a small diary or even to present a creative writing project.
Suitable for Key Stage 2.
Making Paper
Discover the history of paper through this hands-on activity. What did people write on before the invention of paper? What material was the first book printed on? During this 90 minute session students will work in groups to analyse and identify different samples of handmade paper and interpret their findings. Then they will each create their own handmade paper using recyclable paper products and sourced material found from local surroundings. This workshop is a great addition to a Recycling unit.
Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2.
Extended Paper and Ink Workshop
This workshop runs over two days- On the first day (90 minutes) the paper is made as above and on the second day (90 minutes) students create a small book using their handmade paper for a book cover. Then they will explore a variety of natural inks, from Walnut to Hibiscus Ink. They will also have the opportunity to make ink from berries and use calligraphy pens to decorate their books.
Letterpress Printing
Who invented Printing? How does a printing press work? Discover the answers through this engaging workshop. Students will work in groups to investigate examples of printed materials from the 1800s and compare the style of the layout to modern examples. Students will use their new knowledge to experiment with rubbings of linocuts and create their own relief prints.
Suitable for Key Stage 2.
60 minute workshops
Marble Madness
Students will enjoy this exciting and active workshop as they make their own marbled paper with shaving foam and paint. Using wool and paper students will create a small journal and cover it with their handmade marbled paper.
Suitable for Key Stage 2.
Brilliant Bookmarks
This is a great way to encourage students to read at home as they use relief printing to create their own personalised bookmarks. Students design their own relief print that is added to bookmarks made out of strong card. The bookmarks are decorated with tissue paper, ribbon and sequins with wool threaded through the top.
Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2.
Design a Stamp
In 60 minutes students get to experience three different kinds of stamps! The lesson starts by using rubber stamps of letters and pictures. Then vegetables and fruit are used as stamps to decorate simple images, with attention brought to the different textures they create. Finally students create their own stamp using polystyrene to make relief prints.
This lesson also can be delivered as a 45 minute lesson for nursery classes. The session
explores colours, shapes and textures as the students use different materials as stamps
gets a bit messy as they touch and smell different inks.
Suitable for Foundation* and Key Stage 1.
*Foundation workshops run at 45 minutes.
Accordion Books
The accordion book was invented in Asia to make scrolls easier to handle as they increased in length and size. Students will make their own accordion book and design book covers using ink to straw paint. The straw painting is then decorated with tissue paper and sequins.
Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2.
