Bringing Print to you:
Make an impression in your classroom with our programme of workshops.

Schools Workshop Programme

We offer a range of workshops for delivery in schools. Our workshops are designed for students in Key Stage 2 to facilitate learning in the areas of design and technology, art, history and literacy. Our workshops complement the National Curriculum and the suggested schemes of work outlined by the QCA. All workshops contain hands-on activities that promote cross-curricular learning opportunities for students.

The Workshops

90 minute workshops

Making Paper

Discover the history of paper through this hands-on activity. What did people write on before the invention of paper? What material was the first book printed on? During this 90 minute session students will work in groups to analyse and identify different samples of handmade paper and interpret their findings. Then they will each create their own handmade paper using recyclable paper products and sourced material found from local surroundings.

Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2.

Making Ink

Get your hands dirty in this 90 minute workshop as you explore how the first inks were made. Students will make and test a variety of inks using ingredients such as walnut shells, spinach, hibiscus flowers, berries and dirt. Connections will be made to the evolution of ink through discussion and comparisons in consistency, colour and intensity of the samples. This workshop is a great addition to Making Paper as students are able to decorate their handmade paper with these inks.

Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2.

Letterpress Printing

Who invented Printing? How does a printing press work? Discover the answers through this engaging workshop. Students will work in groups to investigate examples of printed materials from the 1800s and compare the style of the layout to modern examples. Students will use their new knowledge to create and experiment with rubbings of linocuts and relief prints using Polystyrene.

Suitable for Key Stage 2.

Pop-up Type

Make your own small pop-up book in 90 minutes! Students will begin the workshop by examining different pop-up books and analysing the paper engineering of specific pop-ups. They will then create their own pop-up book with three different types of paper engineering. This lesson is a great addition to suggested Design and Technology schemes involving Pop-Up Books and paper engineering or as a special DT Art lesson.

Suitable for Key Stage 2.

Pricing for 90 Minute Workshops:

  • £50 for one workshop
  • £90 for two workshops
  • £125 for three workshops
  • £150 for four workshops

60 minute workshops

Marble Madness

Students will enjoy this exciting and active workshop as they make their own marbled paper with shaving foam and paint. Using wool and paper students will create a small journal and cover it with their handmade marbled paper.

Suitable for Key Stage 2.

Brilliant Bookmarks

This is a great way to use up some of the odds and ends in your supply cabinet. Using relief printing, students will create personalised bookmarks. Made out of cardstock, the bookmarks are then decorated and the relief print is added.

These workshops are ideal for an Arts Week, end of term project or just as a fun reward for your class.

Suitable for Key Stage 2.

Design a Stamp

In 60 minutes students get to experience three different kinds of stamps! The lesson starts by using vegetables and fruit to create a stamped collage and then students create their own stamp. The collage and stamp are used to decorate the front and back of a small book and rubber stamps are used to mark the inside pages.

This lesson also can be delivered as a 45 minute lesson for nursery classes. The session explores colours, shapes and textures as the students use different materials as stamps gets a bit messy as they touch and smell different inks.

Suitable for all ages.

Accordion Books

The accordion book was invented in Asia to make scrolls easier to handle as they increased in length and size. Students will make their own accordion book and design book covers using ink to straw paint. The straw painting is then decorated with tissue paper and sequins.

Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2.

Pricing for Marble Madness and Brilliant Bookmarks:

  • £65 for two workshops
  • £90 for three workshops
  • £110 for four workshops
  • £125 for five workshops

In order to keep the cost of workshops to a minimum we ask that schools book at least two 60 minute lessons in one day. Up to five 60 minute lessons can be delivered in one school day.

All workshops take place in your classroom and minimal set up is required. Our Education Team (consisting of a facilitator and assistant) will arrive 30 minutes before the workshop for set up. We will provide the necessary materials but ask that schools provide a few materials such as pencils, scissors and rulers.

Once a workshop has been booked, an information pack containing an outline of the workshop as well as suggested pre-workshop activities will be sent to you. These workshops work well as stand alone lessons or as a link to current areas of study. Our Education team will adapt workshops to suit the needs of your students.
